 London has a temperate climate, highly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean air masses  and Gulf Stream, a powerful warm current. The weather is very changeable and unpredictable, with regular, though light precipitation throughout the year. Winters are gloomy  and wet with occasional snow, though temperature rarely drops below zero.  In some years, when the Thames freezes, Thames Frost Fairs are held, dedicated to certain event or concept and providing a lot of fun and entertainments. Heavy snowfalls are rare; January and February are the coldest months.

The average summer temperatures are about 22-23°C, seldom rising above 33°C. The percentage of rainy or overcast days is relatively high. England is famous for its regular showers and fogs. High humidity contributed to the formation of the notorious London smog, caused by extensive use of coal as a fuel till 1950s. The Clean Air Act, reducing the usage of fossil fuels, was very helpful in settling the problem, and the contemporary atmospheric pollution is much lower that it was in these times. London's built-up area creates the effect of urban microclimate, warmer than in the country. In winter the difference in temperatures can reach up to 5 °C.
