London hosts the embassies of all the countries of the world. They are entitled to render the indispensable assistance to the foreign citizens, and it is very important to know, where the offices are located. The foreigners should immediately contact their embassy or consulate in case of any legal issues, that involve the foreigners’ status or cannot be solved without qualified legislative support. Every traveler should know the customs office requirements to be observed while entering the country. As for UK, the rules differ significantly for EU nationals and citizens of other countries. Goods obtained in EU already include VAT and duty applicable to the country where they were purchased. There is no limit for excise goods for EU nationals, except from some Member States, including East European and Baltic countries, providing that these goods are for personal use or gifts. If the amounts exceed 60 ml of perfumes, 3200 cigarettes, 3 kg of smoking tobacco, 10 litres of spirits and 90 litres of wine, the owner should make an explanation about the purpose of carrying them. If the officer will decide the goods are taken for commercial purpose, they will be liable of seizure and may not be returned.

Many personal effects need declaring, it concerns goods over 4,000 euros in value. There is an option of TI relief, or canceling of custom duties on certain types of goods. The EU visitors can claim TI refund on the possessions clearly of personal nature, including clothing, private jewellery, PCs. Sporting firearms and ammunition require full TI authorization.

VAT is charged on most goods purchased in the UK. The rate is 17.5 %. It is almost always included in the price.
