London United Kingdom Public Transport

Public Transport

Transport in London includes the famous Tube, with 275 stations covering over 408 km (253 miles) of railway. The London Underground was completed in 1863, being the first metro system in the world; now on average three million people use it every single day. It gives easy access to all the key points of the city. Its 12 colour-coded lines are open from around 5:00 till 00:30 Monday to Friday, and from 7:30 till 22:30 on Sundays, although services do vary. To beat the rush hour, it is best to travel after 9:30 in the morning. The Underground network is divided into six zones, where Zone 1 is the most central.

The famous red buses now operate regularly thanks to the new Congestion Charge. The buses are the best choice to travel in the centre. Night buses from Trafalgar Square are the simplest transport solution when Underground is closed.  The buses do not accept cash. It is possible to pay either with Travelcard or Oyster Card or tickets can be bought from machines next to most bus stops in the city centre. Any single journey, including central London (Zone 1), paid in cash costs £2.00. With an Oyster Card the fare is only £1. The children under 16 can travel for free, but they must have special Child Oyster Card to prove it.

The simplest option to pay is the Travelcard or Oyster Card, which are specified according to the zones covered (zones 1-6) and term of validity (1 day – 1 month).
